In my late teens and early twenties, I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As someone living with a mental illness, my first thoughts were fear and worry about my future. I was not sure how I was going to best manage it. After a lot of good advice and support from my family and doctor, I was prescribed medication for my condition. It has been a long journey and the difference that the medication made to my life in those few weeks was incredible.

Regulation of My Emotions

Before starting the medication, I often felt overwhelmed and out of control when it came to my emotions. I would either bottle them up or become increasingly agitated when challenging emotions were present. After a few days of being on medication, I started to notice I felt more in control and less overwhelmed. The sudden regulation of my emotions was a huge relief and what followed was a gradual improvement in my ability to handle and process situations in a balanced and rational manner.

Better Concentration

As an ADHD sufferer, one of the main symptoms I experienced was difficulty with maintaining attention. Before using medication, I found it difficult to focus on tasks for more than a few minutes. I was constantly distracted and unfocused. Once I was on the medication, I gradually noticed an improved ability to concentrate and remember information more easily.

Increased Productivity and Achievement

My improved concentration and regulated emotions had an abrupt positive impact on my productivity and achievement. I suddenly found myself able to work more efficiently as I was no longer put off by external distractions. Success in school and work, which I had previously thought was almost impossible, suddenly became a real possibility, and a source of pride and motivation.

Conclusion

My journey is just that; mine. Medication to treat ADHD is only one of many options available, and it is not for everyone. However, for me, the benefits of medication have been life-changing. I have an improved emotional regulation, better concentration, and increased productivity and achievement. It has allowed me to live a more balanced and healthy life.
