DNA is an integral part of living organisms and is often referred to as the “blueprint of life.” It is the chemical structure that carries all the genetic information needed to create and maintain a living organism.
What is DNA?
DNA is the abbreviation for deoxyribonucleic acid. It is a molecule composed of two strands wound together forming a double helix structure. Each strand is composed of four different compounds called nucleotides, which are connected via chemical bonds. The four nucleotides found in DNA are Adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T).
What DNA Does
DNA stores and transmits genetic information which is inherited from parent to offspring. It does so by containing genetic code in the form of long sequences of the four chemical letters (A,C,T,G). These sequences encode instructions for how to build proteins, which are then used to build and maintain the cells of the body.
In addition to providing instructions for building proteins, DNA also regulates the expression of genes. This means that it not only determines which proteins will be made, but also when and in what amounts.
DNA and Evolution
DNA is also responsible for the evolution of species. It carries information over generations through a process known as natural selection. This is where genetic variation among individuals enables those who have traits that are better suited to their environment to have higher rates of survival and reproduction, while those with less beneficial traits have lower rates of survival and reproduction. This process is what allows species to adapt and evolve over time.
