How do you make meaning when the future appears unclear? How do you find direction in life when you feel hopelessly adrift?

When it seems like we’re just going through the motions, it may be time to discover a new direction forward. It can be hard to know where to begin, but the answers are often inside ourselves.

Prioritize Your Self-Care

Our mental, physical and emotional states have everything to do with how we move forward in life. Keeping up with self-care can remind us of our priorities and affirm our worth. Combat feelings of helplessness with activities such as:

    • Getting enough sleep
    • Making sure to eat nutritious meals
    • Making time for hobbies
    • Seeking help from a therapist
    • Stretching or exercising

Find Your “Why”

When we don’t have direction, it can also help to delve into our “why.” Take some time to examine your purpose for being here. What values drive you? What does success mean to you? How is your life intertwined with the lives of others and how do those relationships motivate you?

Set SMART Goals

Once you’ve figured out why you’re here and your values, the next step is setting SMART goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. To make sure you don’t wander off track, set yourself on a course towards specific goals that give your life direction.

Take Small Steps

Breaking large goals into small steps can still work towards a larger life vision without overwhelming yourself. Small goals helping you build good habits, while showing that you’re taking the first steps towards something bigger.

These simple tips can help guide you towards a clearer direction in life, even when the future appears foggy. Prioritizing self-care, seeking out your why, setting SMART goals and taking small steps, can all lead to an internally-fulfilling outcome and the start of a journey towards a brighter, more meaningful future.
