In 2012, James ‘JT’ Lewis became an overnight celebrity when he starred in the hit TLC reality TV show, “My 600-lb Life.” He weighed 694 pounds when the show first aired and seemed to have no way out of his devastatingly poor health. After years of decline, JT was desperate for change and agreed to take part in the show in search of a better life.
During the eight years since his debut on the series, JT has gone on a remarkable transformation journey. Let’s look at the challenges he’s faced and how he’s overcome them.
A Difficult Childhood
During his episode of the show, JT’s history of pain and challenges was laid bare. He grew up in a broken home, with a father and stepmother who were substance abusers. His mother was also a problem drinker, and JT also suffered from a painful level of rejection.
Battling Obesity
JT had been morbidly obese for most of his life, and the amount he weighed caused major health problems. During his episode, JT was diagnosed with lymphedema, a condition that affects the lymphatic system and causes swelling. He also had difficulty completing day-to-day activities.
Turning His Life Around
Fortunately, JT has since regained his health and is leading an active lifestyle. Here’s how he’s made progress over the years:
- Weight loss: After taking part in the show, JT found an occupation that allowed him to stay active and he was able to lose almost 300 pounds.
- Healthier eating habits: JT learned to make healthier food choices and he even started teaching others how to make healthier meals.
- Surgery: He underwent bariatric surgery, which further helped him reduce his weight.
- Mental well-being: JT worked on his mental health and found ways to battle his anxiety and depression. He credits yoga and running for helping keep him grounded.
Where is JT Now?
In 2019, JT has been living a healthy lifestyle and is currently writing his own books. He promotes his amazing journey on social media and helps others who are struggling with obesity.
In his own words, “I am living a full and active life, it’s not only possible – it’s achievable”. JT serves as an incredible example of self-determination and inspirational progress.
He has overcome his seemingly insurmountable obstacles to become a healthier, happier version of himself. And that’s certainly something to celebrate!
